West Champaran, Bihar

A historically significant part of India- having seen the footsteps of the Budha, Ashoka and of Mahatma Gandhi – has, in recent times, stood out more for its lagging social development.

The villages here are remote and seemingly cut off from the progress of modern India. Child marriage, illiteracy, open defecation, and generational cycles of patriarchy and abject poverty continue to be prevalent.

Our family’s roots are here, and now so is our present. In 2015, Mr. Gulrez Hoda returned to his family’s village in West Champaran and began his mission to educate the young girls.

Hikmat Foundation was created as a public charitable trust and is registered on 23-3-2015 under the Indian Trust Act. In the US, Hikmat Foundation USA was registered as 501 (c)(3) in Virginia in 2024.

Our primary objective and activity is girls’ education in the most impoverished parts of Bihar.
